Versus Cancer

Through the Hope for Kids CAS activity, a concert Versus Cancer was organized to raise funds for the Maharagama Cancer Hospital.

I worked backstage during this event, assisting with the set-up of musical equipment to the needs of the performers. Working for this cause allowed me to become  Engaged with an issue of global importance, which namely is the fight against cancer.

In the end we were able to raise over 200,000 RS. for the Hospital which will be used for refurbishment of the children ward's foundation to prevent possible flooding.

SAISA Basketball

Unfortunately, i did not receive a place on the SAISA basketball team which traveled to Chennai. However, i did recieve a place on the team which played in the local British School Tournament. My awareness of my surroundings needs to be improved as well as my confidence when I'm on the spot. I also need to work on being more aggressive. Working on these things for next years SAISA basketball should help me secure a place on the travelling team.

This acticity helped me to Work collaboratively with other, show commitment to an activity, as well as develop many new skills, though very frequent practices and teamwork.

Western Province Tournament

The entire tournament was unorganized to such an extent that the events that i was meant to participate in on Sunday, were postponed till Tuesday, and then ran on until Wednesday. However, this is excusable considering the sheer number of people, with about 200 participants per age group.
I advanced to the semi-finals easily enough, unfortunately i was beaten in the first semi-final match to the competitor who went on to win the Tournament. I'm not too disheartened by this as i was not expecting to go very far in the tournament anyway, it being my first one, and also because the person i lost to was also All Island champion for the past 2 years. 4th Place out of more than 200 in my age group isn't too bad when i think of it that way.

In this activity, i Developed new skills as i learned a great deal about the strategy of tournament sparring, as well as Working Collaboratively with Others and  as different disciplines of karate are separated into separate groups, and i assisted in the coaching of many of the younger children in preparation for this tournament.

My CAS Goals

Creativity: One of my greatest interests and hobbies is guitar, and i seek to learn it very seriously but there is no music course offered in school so i have taken it upon myself to teach myself. I am currently learning out of Modern Method for Guitar ( http://www.berkleepress.com/catalog/product?product_id=11250) which is currently the main textbook used for the Jazz program in the Berklee Undergraduate School of Music. My goal for the following year is to cover and master all topics presented in this book. This book is however a basic level book, and after finishing I hope to move on to The Guitarist's Guide to Composing and Improvising by Jon Damian, reputed as the best very best jazz guitar tutor in the world. I hope to master the content of both these texts by the end of the two years of the IB DP.

Action: Throughout the course of the two years i would like to be active in as many sports as possible, particularly during the first as it will be impractical during the second year of the IB DP. I hope to participate in SAISA Basketball and Track and Field. I also participate in karate outside of school and will be competing in my very first tournament in November, the Western Province Tournament, in which the first 3 will qualify for the All-Island tournament, which i will try my best to obtain.

Service: I have joined the Hope For Kids activity, in which we regularly visit the Maharagama Cancer Hospital, and spend time with children suffering from cancer. We hope to organize a fund raising program for this cause as soon as possible which i hope to take part in.
